About Dekanted

Dekanted was established in 2024 in Copenhagen, Denmark, with a mission to create honey wine that can stand alongside the finest bottles of traditional wine. Our goal is to show the world what honey wine truly has to offer, once proper winemaking techniques and a fresh perspective are applied.

We aim to offer something truly distinct.

Our concept is simple: each month, we craft a new bottle of honey wine, fermented with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and topped off with artwork from different local artists.

As Dekanted bottles make their way into more hands, they help create a growing demand for beehives, meaning more bees, more wine, and more art, in that order. We produce honey wine that supports biodiversity without compromising on taste or quality.

About the Team

Dekanted was founded by three Copenhageners, brought together by a love of good company, great food, and above all exceptional wine. As honey wine enthusiasts, we share one simple goal: to craft an unforgettable sip while giving back to nature.

And then there are our two mascots: Bee and Dave. Bee works tirelessly covering vast distances, visiting around 540,000 flowers per bottle and traveling the bee-equivalent of circling the globe twice, just to bring you the finest bottles.

Meanwhile, Dave, our skeleton mascot, embodies the revival of honey wine, back to haunt the industry one sip at a time… until he inevitably drinks himself back to death.

FAQ

What is honey wine exactly?

Honey wine is a versatile beverage made similarly to wine, but with honey instead of grapes (surprise!). This opens up endless possibilities for flavor combinations that go beyond the limits of grape-based wines. The result can range from being similar to hard cider, red or white wine.

Imagine a sparkling wine with notes of raspberry, licorice root, and basil, or a sweet dessert wine with caramelized heather honey and sea buckthorn. The possibilities are frankly limitless.

How does this support bees?

Did you know that 71 of the world’s 100 most important crops - feeding 90% of the population - depend on bees? (Shoutout to the UN for that fact.) Bees are nature’s ultimate artists, and their work doesn’t just fill our plates - it now fills our glasses too.

When you choose a bottle of Dekanted honey wine, you’re doing more than sipping something delicious. You’re keeping a bee on the job, supporting the need for wildflowers, plants, and biodiverse meadows that bees pollinate - all a far cry from the monotonous rows of grapevines dominating traditional winemaking. Drink differently and support biodiversity.

Is honey wine the same thing as mead?

Technically... yes. Honey wine is another name for mead.

We call it honey wine however, because our product does not resemble your run of the mill too sticky, too sweet mead - On the contrary!

One of the core ideas behind Dekanted, was that honey wine (or mead) should be a much more wide-spread and recognised beverage, and we couldn't understand why it wasn't already. But we quickly realised that most producers in the mead industry stuck to the same repetitive, and frankly unoriginal, generic viking theme (at least here in Denmark). Despite the fact that honey wine has a massive range of possible flavour combinations, everyone was making the same unappealing, sticky and overly sweet "viking" wine.

We came to the conclusion that we could not ignore this untapped potential, and it became our divine mission to spread the holy message of honey wine! We decided to rethink the possibilities of this hyper-versatile drink, creating our own little mead-renaissance of sorts.

Thus, Dekanted's 'Honey wine' was born with a mission to convince the world that mead (and this is the last time we ever call it that) could be so much more.

Would I like it? Should I get some?

Yes. Yes you would. And yes. Yes you should.
